The Adaptive Physical Education Teacher utilizes current strategies and theories to plan, organize and implement structured Adapted Physical Education lessons to students with disabilities, for optimum performance and ability. 



MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS 

 

EDUCATION: 

 

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution in a related field required. 



CERTIFICATION/LICENSE:  

 

Must hold or be eligible to hold a valid Oklahoma Certification in Physical Education.

 

WORK EXPERIENCE: 

 

 Work experience gained through education and certification/license requirements. 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

 

  • Knowledge of research-based best practices and interventions for students with disabilities in the area of physical education and Special Olympics. 
  • Ability to analyze student data and develop lesson plans.  
  • Ability to effectively develop and deliver content-specific professional learning. 
  • Ability to plan, organize, and develop district Special Olympic events. 
  • Effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders.  
  • Understanding of the requirements for Special Olympic events. 
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt as needed between in-person learning environments. 
  • Implements developed curricula in the areas of flexibility, balance, strength, and cardiovascular conditioning. 
  • Consult with Teacher of Record  for development of IEP current performance and objectives. 
  • Trains (class and/or P.E.) teachers to implement curricula and goals adapted as needed for in-person environments.  
  • Works/consults with the occupational and physical therapists as needed. 
  • Encourages social skills and participation with disabled and non-disabled peers. 
  • Provides direct and consultative APE services to Intellectually Disabled students, students with Autism, TBI, Orthopedic Impairments, OHI, and other disabilities not listed, grades K-12. 
  • Conducts assessments, to assist in generating IEP goals/objectives. 
  • Administer and/or supports state and local standardized testing processes and policies.
  • Establishes and maintains effective relationships with school Principals and staff, central office administrators and staff, parents, students, care providers, and volunteers. 
  • Assigns and works with a PE contact person from each school.
  • Completes APE in-service training with all teachers/teams as requested. 
  • Provides direct service during assigned gym times. 
  • Participates in all Special Olympics activities and events. 
  • When in an in-person teaching environment, responsible for wiping down surfaces daily to uphold sanitation standards as required for a safe school environment. 
  • Effectively communicates with students, parents and other stakeholders via verbal and written communication. 
  • Attends in-person faculty meetings, teacher training workshops and educational conferences to maintain and improve professional competence. 
  • Complies with all requirements for mandatory reporting of child abuse, illegal harassment, breaches of ethics, or any criminal activity of which the employee becomes aware.
  • Required to have prompt, regular attendance in-person and be available to work on-site, in-person during regular business hours. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned by an appropriate administrator or their representative.

Vision: Vision ability required to sufficiently organize and implement structured Adapted Physical Education lessons to students with disabilities.

 

Hearing: Ability to tolerate exposure to noisy conditions. 

 

Speech: Ability to be understood in face-to-face communications, to speak with a level of proficiency and volume to be understood over a telephone or computer. 

 

Upper Body Mobility: Upper Body Mobility required to sufficiently teach and implement curricula in the areas of flexibility, balance, strength, and cardiovascular conditioning.
